Mindful Holiday Shopping: 5 Yoga Companies That Give Back
“Every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want.” - Anne Lappe
’Tis the season of giving! & spending. We buy presents for our friends, our family & our coworkers. We buy festive decorations, battle the crowds on Black Friday & scour our favorite websites for the best deals on Cyber Monday. Amidst the craziness of the holidays it can be easy to lose sight of what’s really important.
In yoga philosophy, seva is the concept & practice of selfless service. Just as we practice seva in yoga, so too can we practice it this holiday season by being conscious consumers. Who benefits when you purchase something from your local department store? Does your favorite outlet donate any of their profits to charity? Do you know the ethics behind your favorite brand’s production?
In the spirit of using the coming of the new year to reexamine one’s priorities, why not make an effort to buy from companies who give back this holiday season?
Here are my 5 favorite companies that donate a portion of their profits to some pretty amazing causes:
1. Jade Yoga
Jade gives back to the earth & the community in FOUR different ways. They plant a tree for every product sold with over 1 million trees planted so far! They also donate $5 from each mat of a specific color to a specific cause: teal for ovarian cancer causes, pink for breast cancer causes, saffron for autism causes, etc. Jade even gives away 50 mats per month to programs that provide yoga to shelters, hospitals, rehab centers & more. & finally, Jade has four “Giving Days” throughout the year when they donate a portion of their profits to specific causes! For example, on Earth Day 10% of online profits go to an environmental organization! I love Jade Yoga mats because of their uniquely grippy texture - they’re perfect for anyone who hates slipping on their mat, especially in the middle of a sweaty flow!
2. Joriki Yoga Apparel
Joriki’s slogan says it all, ‘Look forward, give back.’ Your purchase directly empowers impoverished women & children around the world. For every pair sold of the Guatemalan print Melis is wearing above, Joriki will donate 100% of the proceeds to Pencils of Promise, an organization dedicated to providing children around the world with quality education. When’s the last time you shopped from a company that donated ALL of their profits? Joriki is truly making a difference in the fight against global poverty & with your purchase, you can too!
3. Dirty Blondes
Dirty Blondes - As part of their commitment to helping empower women & to spreading love & kindness in their communities, Dirty Blondes created the ‘Love is Dope’ campaign. Through these efforts, 20% of the profits from the Love is Dope collection are donated to One Love Dallas, a yoga movement dedicated to supporting underserved communities. This crop from the collection is the perfect post-yoga cover up. Use code “MORGAN10” for 10% off your purchase from now until December 31st!
4. Bangs Shoes
I know, I know; technically, Bangs isn’t a yoga company BUT you need shoes to wear to & from your yoga class, right? Besides making an awesome pair of shoes with a kickin’ minimalist aesthetic, Bangs invests 20% of their net profits into helping entrepreneurs start businesses. Their shoes are also responsibly made inside a family-owned factory & are completely vegan. To date, Bangs has invested in 800 entrepreneurs in 64 countries! By buying Bangs Shoes, ‘your adventures help others find theirs.’ I’m four pairs strong at this point, with no plans to stop anytime soon!
5. Spiritual Gangster
Spiritual Gangster finds inspiration through generosity. They give back & exercise love by donating meals for every item sold. They’ve donated over 10 million meals to date & are making a tangible impact in the fight against world hunger.
