Cultivating Mat Motivation
What motivates you to get on your mat? Is it the flood of endorphins as you lay down for savasana? Or the mental clarity you find mid-flow? Maybe it’s your desire to refine a certain asana. Whatever your motivation & regardless of how much you love yoga, occasionally, there are probably days when you’re just not feeling it.
For those days that I’m fighting an internal battle about whether to drag my butt out of bed or to continue guiltily staring at my mat from across the room, I’ve discovered the secret to cultivating mat motivation: changing into my favorite pair of yoga pants! A quality pair of yoga pants can make even the cloudiest of days seem just a bit sunnier! Every single facet from the fit to the material to the color has the potential to elevate your practice.
Here are 3 of my favorite motivation-boosting pants:
These pants are so cozy it’s like wearing a hug! When I’m feeling particularly anxious & unmotivated, I love to put these on to flow. The high-waist keeps me feeling secure & supported, while the full length keeps me feeling grounded. They’re thinner than most yoga pants, which I really appreciate when life starts to feel a little claustrophobic. Blue is also a calming color that symbolizes strength & I love the uniqueness of this particular shade. I can’t help but smile when I’m wearing such a bright pair of pants!
Standard waist lovers, listen up! Dharma Bums sells almost every design in both high- & standard waist options! The shiny, soft material of this pair will feel glorious against your skin & even though the supportive material is thick, it’s still breathable. These are my go-to pair if I need a confidence boost when I’m planning to try a new asana or a particularly challenging flow. Shiny pants are also perfect for practicing arm balances because they don’t allow “cheating.” As your arms start to slip off of the fabric, your core is forced to engage even more!
If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen this pair time & time again - the pop art print is just so fun! Any time I need a mental pick me up I put these babies on. They also have a comfortably secure fit at the waistband & stretch like a second skin.
Yoga is obviously about much more than pant material and color swatches, but what you wear can affect your practice. If you’re feeling uncomfortable & unconfident, you won’t channel all of your mental energy into your practice. Conversely, if you step onto your mat with a sense of satisfaction & security, you’ll more easily be able to dive right in! Think of your yoga pants as you would a block, a strap or any other prop: they’re there to help make your practice as accessible & as fruitful as possible. You just have to let them.
