@georgia.bryan on Yoga, Youth & Living in the Moment
If you haven’t heard of Georgia Bryan yet, you will soon. Georgia is turning heads not only on Instagram, but on stages all over the world, with her ability to contort her body into mind-boggling shapes. In addition to being a yogi, Georgia is a circus performer, actress and dancer. Oh, & she’s only 13 years old! We interviewed Georgia to get the scoop on everything from her yoga journey to her favorite ways to de-stress.
How did you get into yoga? What was your motivation?
I was performing in a youth circus group that was getting very stressful for me; I started experiencing terrible migraines. I turned to yoga as a form of exercise but also as a way to relax my mind.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their yoga journey?
I would advise everyone not to worry about what other people in the class are doing, and to just do what feels right for their body. I would also tell beginners to try a variety of different studios and teachers until they find a perfect fit. Another important thing is to never leave a class before savasana because it's the best part.
How do you motivate yourself to get on your mat on days when you just don't want to?
There are definitely days when yoga seems like the last thing I want to do. When this happens, I remind myself that every time I practice I end up feeling great, even if I initially didn't want to go. And it's true! After any yoga class I am always in a good mood.
Middle school isn't always easy, and yoga is an amazing way to relieve the anxiety that many kids my age experience. I would encourage more kids to try yoga because it helps both your mind and your body feel good.
How do you de-stress after a particularly rough day?
When I have had a rough day, I turn on my diffuser, put on my favorite Spotify playlist and practice handstands. I also find front-bending to be really stress relieving. Sometimes I just lie down and put my feet behind my head.
What advice would you give your younger self?
I'm still really young, but I'm learning to enjoy being in the moment. I'm trying to worry less about where I think I should be and just focus on where I am.
